Q: When does registration begin?
A: Registration starts the first day of classes (each semester) and does not end after the last class is initiated. Most registration occurs within the first two (2) weeks of the semester due to fact that most of our classes fill within this period of time.

You will have to input a few variables into the device - such as: age, weight, sex, and height. The test takes about 10 seconds to calculate your body fat. Please note that the result is an estimation within .5%.

SCUBA Diving

Q: What is SCUBA diving?
A: SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) diving involves the use of compressed air and a demand delivery system to provide life-support in the underwater environment. SCUBA divers are free swimming, and have a great deal of freedom and mobility underwater.

Q: Is SCUBA Diving Safe?
A: Yes, provided that you (a) have been trained by a qualified, insured, SCUBA instructor who is affiliated with a recognized agency and (b) you follow your training and adhere to the limits established for your particular level of certification. There are numerous national and international agencies that formally train and certify SCUBA divers. They all strive to produce well-trained, self-sufficient divers who will pursue the sport safely.

Q: What do I need to bring to class?
A: You will not need to bring anything for the most of our classes. We provide the equipment. However, for SCUBA classes you will need mask, snorkel, fins, and a weight belt – please note that the dive trip (for finalizing the certification) is an added expense. We do not list the price for the trip since the location changes each semester and cost varies.

Q: By what agency will I be certified?
A: The G.I.T. FIT SCUBA Program offers certification from two different agencies - YMCA and CMAS. The YMCA SCUBA Program is the oldest national SCUBA certification program in the United States. CMAS is a (largely) European organization. Other agency certifications may be available, depending on who is teaching the class. If you desire another agency's certification, please check with your instructor.

Q: What will be the limits of my certification?
A: For students who complete all requirements of the basic course, the G.I.T. FIT SCUBA Program provides certification at the level of YMCA OWII (Open Water Two). To stay within the limits of your certification, you must dive under conditions that approximate those in which you were trained, and to depths of no more than 70 feet.

Q: Can anybody learn to SCUBA dive?
A: In most cases, yes - any person who is in good health can learn to SCUBA dive. There are certain medical conditions, however, that will prevent you from participating in a SCUBA class - among them are asthma, epilepsy, chronic hepatitis, and a history of seizures or spontaneous pneumothorax (collapsed lung). Also, women who are pregnant will be prohibited from participating in a SCUBA certification course. Your instructor will ask you to fill out a Medical Questionnaire before approving your enrollment in the course. Some students may need to get a doctor's written permission before being allowed in the class. Your instructor will inform you if you need to do this. NOTE: You must have access into the CRC in order to participate – meaning a GT student who has paid their fees, and/or a CRC member (i.e. faculty/staff, alumni, retiree and spouse).

Q: Are there any pre-requisites?
A: Yes - there are specific swimming skills that you will have to pass. Your instructor will explain these at the first class. If you are a reasonably competent swimmer who is comfortable in the water, then you should have no trouble passing the tests.

Q: What are the other requirements?
A: The basic certification course consists of approximately 30 hours of training. The hours are evenly split between classroom and pool. The lecture sessions will provide the necessary background and theory of what SCUBA diving is all about. The pool sessions are designed to teach you skills that are necessary to dive safely, and to give you an opportunity to practice and demonstrate these skills under controlled conditions. Following the lecture and pool sessions, you will be required to take a certification trip.

Q: What is a "Certification Trip?"
A: Certification Trip is a series of dives that are conducted in Open Water at the end of the formal course. The Certification Trip for the G.I.T. FIT SCUBA Program is normally taken during a school break (either mid-term or end of term). Our traditional locations for these trips have been the Florida Keys or Florida's Atlantic coast. We also occasionally run trips to the Bahamas, so there are several choices available for trips. There are seven required dives (one on snorkel and six on SCUBA), consisting of some combination of reef dives and wreck dives. Other dives may be offered as an option (for example, night dives). The required dives allow students to demonstrate the skills they have practiced in the pool sessions, and to transfer those skills to actual Open Water diving. All dives (except the optional ones) are required to receive the YMCA OWII certification card.

Q: What if I can't make the trip?
A: You have six months from the completion of the formal course in which to do your certification dives. If you cannot make the trip for the semester in which you actually took the class, then you can make a subsequent semester's trip (within the six month window). If more than six months elapses from the completion of the formal course, then you must repeat the entire course.

Q: After I get certified, then what?
A: Just go diving! Land-locked as we are here at Georgia Tech, there are still numerous opportunities to further your diving education. For example, he G.I.T. FIT SCUBA Program runs Certification Trips during almost every school break - you are welcome to go along on these as a certified diver. In addition, parts of coastal Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas are only a few hours drive away. In addition to the trips, there are a number of additional certification courses that are offered through G.I.T. FIT. These allow students to continue with their diving education, and to develop the skills and knowledge to become safer divers. The G.I.T. FIT SCUBA Program currently offers training courses in Advanced Openwater, Rescue, and Nitrox, as well as opportunities for other specialties.

Q: What are the costs?
A: The fee for the basic certification course and use of the pool is $235. This includes the textbook and all materials, plus use of all gear (minus mask, snorkel, fins and weight belt – which you must provide) for the course. The only additional expense is the Certification Trip, which usually runs about $400-600, depending on location, group size, etc.
