How do I get involved?

Intramural teams are created through common bonds or associations with the community at Georgia Tech.

  • Friends
  • Resident Halls (contact the CA on your floor)
  • Campus Organizations (Clubs)
  • Sororities or Fraternities (the individual Greek organization's Sports Chairman or President will have information)

Individuals not successful in the above-mentioned efforts still have the following efforts:

  • Contact the Intramural Program
    • Go the IMOnline
    • Turn information in at the beginning of the semester and before the captain's meeting
  • Go to some Intramural games and ask around. Women's teams, specifically, are always looking for new players

Team Registration Policy & Procedures
  • Obtain registration information from the Intramural Office
    • Available at the beginning of each semester
    • Pick up the materials in the Intramural Office (located on the 4th level) or from this web page.
  • Attend the Registration Meeting
    • Topics discussed at the meeting will include: new and current policies, rule changes, days of play, leagues, and a question & answer session
    • All attendees will be given access for online registration

Note: Teams who fail to attend the meeting will have to wait until the late registration day and time to enter a team. If the meeting is missed by a captain, the team will be placed at a disadvantage during late registration because there may be more interested teams than available slots.
  • Registering Your Team
      • Online Registration
You may use the login information given in your captain's card to access the Online Registration program through our website. Registration times will be announced at the captains meeting. You must pay for your teams at the office by 12:00 PM of the second day of registration. During online registration, teams are only permitted to enter a division associated with their respective organization (i.e.graduate). If a team wrongly registers in a division specified for either fraternity, graduate, or housing...they will be removed.
      • Office Registration
You may also sign up your teams at the Intramural Office from 9 AM to 5 PM of either the first or second day following the captain's meeting. You must bring your captain's card to the office to use this registration.
      • Late Registration
Late registration is available from 1 PM to 5 PM of the second day of registration. There will be no restrictions regarding which division a team may sign up for during late registration.

Note: A team name will only be able to be used one time per sport. All names are subject to approval by the Assistant Director for Intramurals. If two teams have signed up with the same name the team which has registered first keeps the name; the second team is required to select another team name.
  • Paying for your teams

The following materials will be needed to pay for your teams regardless of the method of registration:

    • Cost sheet - Defines the price for each team in a respective sport
    • Registration Card - Registration ticket given at the Captain's meeting (not during late registration). If registering online, please bring the Team Summary Report too.
    • Form of payment - Check, money order, MasterCard, or Visa. NOTE: All checks must be made out to Georgia Tech. Cash will not be accepted.
    • Registration card - Color-coded card that corresponds with the respective league. The sport, team name, and captain information will be placed on this card.
  • Refund -- Refunds for teams may only be done during the registration period

Eligibility

The following section outlines requirements for Intramural participation. This section describes general rules and special cases for professional, varsity, and sport clubs athletes.

A. Student Eligibility
A student must satisfy the following requirements which are outlined in the Georgia Institute of Technology Catalog:

    • Be enrolled in a degree program
    • Maintain a schedule with at least six (6) credit hours
    • Be a student in the Cooperative Division on work semester and have paid the CRC Fee and Rec Facility Fee
    • Participation also requires satisfaction of any additional requirements established by the Student Activities Committee of the Academic Senate

B. Waiver Form - Assumption of Risk
Each student, faculty, and staff member is required to sign our waiver prior to participating in any intramural activities. The waiver is part of the sign-in process for each sport a participant plays.

C. Faculty/Staff
Must be full-time employees (40 hours/week). Faculty/Staff must purchase a membership to gain entrance into CRC, however those who have not can still participate in Intramurals that take place outside and not held within the Campus Recreation Center (i.e. flag football).

D. Spouses

    • Only eligible for Co-Rec Sports; spouse must be on the same team

    • Must have a Spouse ID. Spouse ID's can be obtained at the Buzz Card Center.

E. Professional Athletes
Definition: Any person who has played at any level of professional athletics, which includes signing a professional contract.
Eligibility Rule: Not eligible for intramurals in either the same sport or intramural equivalent.

    • A maximum of one former professional athlete is permitted on a roster
    • A former professional athlete also counts as a former varsity athlete for all intramural sports. This means that a team is NOT permitted to have a former professional athlete and former varsity athlete on their roster.

F. Current and Former Varsity Athletes
Definition: Any member of a varsity team sponsored by the Athletic Association.

    • Eligibility Rule: Ineligible to play the respective sport in the same academic year.
    • Only one former varsity player may be on a roster of the same sport.

G. Sport club participants
Definition: Any sports team which is sponsored by the Student Government Association.

    • Eligibility Rule: Can only comprise 30% of the number required to play in their respective sport.
    • Below is the list of club players allowed on an intramural team's roster.

Women Playing on Men's Teams

A woman is allowed to participate on all levels of men’s teams but would become ineligible for a women's team in that sport.

Playing on two teams

  • One Team Rule
    • The rule is imposed at the time of sign-in; the player does not have to play in the game.
    • It is illegal for any person to play on more than one team in the same sport.
  • Penalties
    • The second team that he/she has played on will forfeit the games in which he/she has signed in on the game sheet.
    • Further penalties will be at the discretion of the director
  • Exception
    • Participation on a Co-Rec team in one sport and a another team in the same sport is allowed.
    • For example, if you play on a fraternity softball team, you may also play on a different co-rec softball team.

No Shows & Forfeits

Teams that do not have anyone sign in for a game will be charged with a no-show loss. Teams who do not have the minimum required number of players to sign in will be charged with a forfeit loss. A forfeit loss also applies to teams that use an ineligble player. Two no-shows will result in a team being removed from league play and teams with a combination of three no-shows and/or forfeits will also be removed.

Post Season Play

A. Playoff Determination

  • Each division will send its top two teams to the playoffs
  • Teams must have a minimum sportsmanship rating average of 2.75 to be eligible for the playoffs
  • If a team that makes the playoffs is in a division not associated with their organizational status, they will be moved to the playoff bracket that fits their status (independent, graduate, fraternity, or housing) and seeded last.
  • TIES in division play will be settled in the following way:
    • Elimination from consideration is due to teams who have a "no show" or receive a single game sportsmanship rating below 1.5
    • Ties will be broken on the basis of the head- to-head competition
    • If three or more teams are tied, we will look at the head-to-head first, and then break the tie with a point differential, taking only the scores of the respective teams involved versus each other. Points scored for will be compared to points scored against as shown in the following example:

        Team A 16 Team B 8
        Team A 16 Team C 24
Points scored 32 Points allowed 32
        Team A point differential 0
        Team B 8 Team A 16
        Team B 32 Team C 8
Points scored 40 Points allowed 24
        Team B point differential +16
        Team C 24 Team A 16
        Team C 8 Team B 32
Points scored 32 Points allowed 48
        Team C point differential -16

Team B is put into the playoffs because of their positive point differential. If two teams in this division need to go then Team A would also go because it had the next highest point differential.

Note: If a team makes the playoffs but is removed due to an overall sportsmanship rating of less than 2.75, the next-highest rated third-place team will be moved into the playoffs (Dugan Rule).

If three teams are tied after point differential, the next tie breaker will be average sportsmanship score. If necesary, the final tie breaker will be point differential for all regular season games.

B. Seeding System
The seedings in the playoffs are determined by each team's rating score. This automated program ranks teams based on win %, total offense, total defense, sportsmanship and opponents win %. For those teams that make the playoffs, teams that win their division will be seeded first, followed by the second-place and wildcard teams. To find more information on how the rating system works for a particular sport, see below.

C. School Championships
This is the top level of play and the winner of this tournament is the School Champion. The teams in this tournament will consist of the top two teams from each open league (Fraternity, Housing, Graduate, and Independent) and all teams in the women's bracket to allow a men's and women's champion. If required, an individual tournament will be held for each respective men's league to determine the top two teams that will advance to the School Championship Tournament.

D. Co-Rec and Women's Leagues
The Co-Rec League and Women's Leagues will play in one tournament each. There is no distinction made for Independent or Sorority.

E. Wildcards
Each league (Independent, Fraternity, Housing, Graduate, Co-Rec, & Women) will allow one wildcard team to gain entrance into the playoffs. The wildcard team will be the third-place team with the highest rating score. All tie-breaking will apply. If a team is removed from the playoffs due to sportsmanship, the next, highest-rated third place team in a division will be placed in the respective playoff bracket based on their rating score.

When the highest-rated wildcard team is from a different league, another wildcard team will NOT be added to the playoffs.

Any team that makes the playoffs but is moved to their appropriate bracket will be seeded last.

If two teams are have the same rating score, the first tie breaker is the overall sportsmanship rating. The second tie breaker is point differential.

F. Sportsmanship Scores
During the playoffs, teams are expected to show proper sportsmanship and will be held to the same standards as they are during the regular season. Therefore, if a team receives a sportsmanship score of less than 1.5 in any game, they will be removed from the playoff bracket. In addition, if a team receives a sportsmanship score of less than 2.75, they will be placed on probation for the duration of the playoffs. A 2nd sportsmanship score of less than 2.75 will remove them from the bracket. If a team has won their game but is removed from the bracket due to sportsmanship, their next opponent will receive a forfeit win.

Alcohol Policy

Alcoholic beverages are not permitted during Intramural play and are not allowed at any Intramural locations. This applies to both players and fans. Any alcoholic beverage found in the area will result in the Campus Police being called. This is a campus policy and any team found to be in violation may forfeit the remainder of the season.

Further, any person thought to be intoxicated will be asked to vacate the Intramural location. Any person not cooperating when asked will cause his/her team to forfeit the game and face disciplinary action. This also applies to players and fans. The offending person will be suspended from Intramural activities for at least one semester.

He/she must also meet with the Assistant Director for Intramurals within twenty-four (24) hours of the incident. Failure to comply may result in the offender’s name being turned over to the Dean of Students’ Office for further action.

Behavior

Since poor behavior is detrimental to the success of our program, the following procedures/rules are in place for individual incidents.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct: The development of sportsmanlike behavior is one of the major goals of the Intramural Program. An individual must be able to accept defeat without blaming others. Our program is for individuals who play and live by the rules. Therefore, any team that receives three unsporting calls (technical foul, yellow card, red card, unsportsmanlike bevavior) during one game will cause that game to be immediately stopped and a forfeit will be called. Administrative fouls do not count toward this total. Also, the final score of the game will be determined by what team is winning at the time. If the losing team causes the forfeit, the score at the time of stoppage will be the final score.

Ejection Policy: Anyone ejected from an Intramural event will be subject to the following policy: The supervisor will forward the offender’s name to the Assistant Director for Intramurals . The offender must contact the Intramural Office to schedule a meeting; the offender will be deemed ineligible until he or she has met with the Assistant Director of Intramurals.

Disrespect Toward Officials and Student Supervisors: Any player addressing an official or supervisor in a derogatory or discourteous manner disqualifies himself/ herself immediately for the remainder of the game and must leave the site.
Ejection Policy in effect.

Shoving or Striking an Official or Student Supervisor: This shall result in suspension for a minimum of the remainder of the school year to possibly permanent suspension and referral to the Dean of Student’s Office for further disciplinary action.
Ejection Policy in effect.

Fighting
: A minimum of two weeks suspension from ALL Intramural sports and possible disqualification for the remainder of the year.
Ejection Policy in effect.

Code of Student Discipline: A student, upon registration at Georgia Tech, agrees to conform to its regulations and its policies and is subject to disciplinary action by the Institute for any violation of the Student Discipline Code.

Sportsmanship Rating

The Intramural program has instituted this ratings system for player and team sportsmanship for Intramural games. After each game, the officials and supervisors rate each participating team on their sportsmanship. The final judgment is with the student supervisor.

Captain's Responsibility

The person delegated by a team to be captain is responsible for fulfilling the following duties:

  • Ensure each member of the team has signed a Waiver and Assumption of Risk form.

  • Enter his/her team in the desired sports on or before the announced closing date.

  • Keep fully informed of eligibility rules and abide by them. The captain is completely responsible for the eligibility of his/her members.

  • Keep in close and frequent contact with the Intramural staff.

  • Notify team members of the rules of the game and game schedules so that all are ready to play at game time.

  • Represent his/her team at all meetings, protest negotiations, etc. for which he/she is asked to be present.

  • Ensure that his/her team is never credited with a loss because of a forfeit or a no-show.

Protest Policy

Protests will only be accepted when challenging a rule interpretation. Judgment calls CANNOT be protested.

  • All protests must be made to the supervisor on duty immediately following the play in question. Once another play has occurred, the protest becomes invalid.

  • The supervisor will stop play and log the protest on the game sheet. Once the protest has been logged, play will resume.

  • The team that files the protest must call the Intramural Office the next day to set up an appointment with the Assistant Director for Intramurals.

  • The respective team will be required to bring a check made out to "Georgia Tech" for $10.00. This is a protest fee and must be dropped of to the Intramural Office before 12PM the following day of the incident..

  • If the ruling is overturned, the check will be returned and the game will be rescheduled, starting from the point that caused the protest.

  • If the incident had no bearing on the outcome of the game, the check will be returned but the game will not be rescheduled. This is in the judgement of the officials, supervisor, and Assistant Director for Intramurals.

  • If the ruling is denied, the final outcome stands.

Miscellaneous Information

This section provides useful information for interested students.

Insurance
The Intramural Program does not carry any insurance for injuries that occur during play or during activities sponsored throughout the department. Students can carry additional insurance through the Infirmary.

Employment
The Intramural Program within the Campus Recreation Department at Georgia Tech has several opportunities for student involvement through employment. The program sustains over 50 student employees per semester and is always accepting applications from interested individuals. These positions within the Intramural Program can offer the Georgia Tech student an array of skills and mechanics that can be carried over into real world applications. Many employers today are looking for people who can operate in a team environment, effectively communicate with consumers, program management, and can learn to identify and resolve disharmony in a situation. All of these skills can and will be learned by an individual who seeks to become part of the Georgia Tech Intramural Program. And the great part is, no experience is necessary; we will provide all the training!

Any interested students should call the Intramural Office at 404.894.9984 or email us at gtim@gatech.edu

Rating Score

The rating score, as previously mentioned, is only used to seed the playoff brackets after teams have earned their place in the post-season. The score does not place teams in the playoffs. However, there is one exception. The highest rated third-place team in each league will move on to the playoffs as a wild card.

Each season there are many questions concerning the rating score. In an effort to answer some of the general ones, below is a general breakdown of how our system works.

For every game, both teams are awarded certain points based on specific variables. The rating score you see next to a team is the total amount of points awarded, divided by their number of games played. These variables are game won, points for, points against, opponent's record, and sportsmanship. There is a sliding scale for each of these variables; however "points for" and "points against" will differ for each sport. It is important to note that the scale for each sport has been fine-tuned over the the previous years and that regardless, every team is using the same scale. The specific breakdown we use for each game can be found on the following links (Fall-Phase 1, Fall-Phase 2, Spring-Phase 1, Spring,-Phase 2, Summer). In addition, below are the other variables and some information:

Game won
Each team will receive 10 points for a win

Points for
Each team will receive a maximum of 20 points, based on their score in a game. This is a sliding scale as the higher the score, the more points a team is awarded. For instance, if a team is shut out, they will receive 0 points.

Points against
Each team will receive a maximum of 20 points, based on their opponent's score. This is a sliding scale as the lower the score, the more points are awarded. For instance, if a team shuts out an opponent, they will receive 20 points.

Opponent's record
Each team will receive a maximum of 20 points for their opponent's win percentage. This is a sliding scale as the better the opponent's win percentage is, the more points a team is awarded. Also, this is the most theoretical variable, because once you beat a 3-0 team, they're now 3-1, so the dynamic score will change week-to-week.

Sportsmanship score
Each team will receive a maximum of 10 points for their sportsmanship score. This is a sliding scale as the higher the score, the more points a team is awarded. The breakdown is as follows:

Sportsmanship Score

Forfeits and No-shows
There are games throughout the season that result in a forfeit or no-show. When a game is played and the team that won had an illegal player, the game will result in a forfeit win for the other team. The sportsmanship score for that game will be included in with the other variables for the winning team. The losing team will only receive a total of five rating-score points for that game.

However, when the game is not played due to a team not showing up or not having enough players, the rating score system handles the breakdown a little different. For the winning team, the sportsmanship score will be factored in taking the average of all games played and assigning the appropriate point value. Keep in mind this is a retroactive score, in that a team's sportsmanship score for that game will change throughout the season as they play more games and are given sportsmanship scores for those games.

A newly developed system for forfeit/no-show scores has been developed and incorporated, beginnng Spring 2007. The following game scores will be entered into the system when a game is a forfeit or no-show:
